Second largest city in Portugal and administrative centre of the surrounding Greater Metropolitan municipalities, Porto has long been a favourite amongst tourists. Situated on the Douro River, the city has a long and fascinating history. Porto is the home of Port wine and is famed for it's stunning UNESCO World Heritage listed city centre, referred to as the 'Ribeira'. The Clerigos Church tower, theStock Exchange Palace, the Arab Room in the Palacio da Bolsa, the Oporto Cathedral and the Museum of Modern Art are amongst the most visited sights in the city. Close by to Porto are a number of top quality beaches for swimming, water sports and sunbathing, all scattered along theAtlantic coast (reachable off of the IC1). Inland from Porto are the towns of Amarante (thirty-five kilometres west on the IP4/A4), Braga (forty kilometres north on the IP1/A3) and Guimaraes (forty kilometres north-east off of the IP1).
Porto is serviced by Francisco de Sa Carneiro Airport (Aeroporto do Porto or Aeroporto de Pedras Rubras) which is situated six kilometres north-west of Porto city centre off of the A41/IC24 CREP. Although the airport is quite busy it is surpassed by Lisbon and Faro Airports in terms of passengers. Flights from London (British Airways, TAP Portugal and Ryan Air), Liverpool, Bristol, Birmingham and Dublin (all Ryan Air) are amongst the routes flown into and out of the airport. It is a good idea to hire a car for exploring the wider Oporto region, with Sixt, National/Alamo, Hertz, Avis, Europcar and Budget all operating out of the airport terminal.
